STEP BY STEP

Any serious design projects should start with some type of look at the people of situation that the project is about. There are many different research processes and all projects are different. This is a suggested guide for different steps in the research process. Mix, match as you deem useful. Click on a category to read more:

  Most design projects start with some sort of task or mission in a design brief. The brief may vary in detail and quality and should often be treated to some constructive criticism
The first step in any serious design research is some sort of overview and planning. This includes a definition of your goals and an inventory of time and resources
The start of your actual research work should include a broad research to find out what specific areas that will become important to your project.
The next phase is aimed at getting a deeper understanding of the areas that you now know are important to your project.
The design activities in your project may vary from simple sketching to full scale models and solutions. The outcome represents a solution to a problem or ambition.
There is usually a need to test your design solution in an appropriate context. This will test your solution and give you valuable feedback.
The final outcome of your project is as much a result of your research as the actual form giving phase. Sometimes the question is more important than the answer.
