2010-06-22 Beyond Nice Design Award 2010 Announced!

Transformator annually presents a sharp minded and deserving graduating master student from the Industrial Design university community with the BEYOND NICE DESIGN! Award. The award is intended to reward and pay special attention to the innovative power of design thinking and to make clear to the world that many things can be made infinitely better with a bit of design ingenuity

Anyone who wishes to realize the true potential of industrial design methods and thinking need to learn to embrace complexity. This year’s winner has demonstrated a remarkable ability to orchestrate a complex reality and to create joy and meaning where one usually finds indifference and confusion. Creativity and innovation is all good and well but it doesn’t make much difference in the world if it doesn’t bring about change. To do so you need to be Innovative in both idea and spirit, beyond shape and form - and have the ability to make it happen. This year’s winner has managed to complete the circle between product, brand and experience in solutions that is in line with the wants and dreams of both business and customer. A soundly executed project with caring consideration for both details and direction.

Martina Gustavsson graduates from the MFA degree program Formgiving Intelligence of the Industrial Design department at Konstfack. She receives the award for her degree project "Product Designer – At your service" a Service Design concept in cooperation with the hair salon chain Björn Axén. The Service concept is designed to fulfill the needs of the customer, creating a differentiated experience and bringing the values of the brand to life. Congratulations!

2010-04-30 Shaping National Policy for Service Innovation
Initiated by Deputy Prime Minister Maude Olofsson the Swedish government is developing a national policy for service innovation. As the largest and most established service design provider in Sweden, Transformator has been invited to take part in the process. The Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications states that “In order to meet future challenges, we need to know more about how innovation is created in the service economy, becoming more able to respond to the needs and better represent development opportunities.” Follow the discussion here or read Transformator’s CEO Daniel Ewerman’s posting in english below:

I have been following the discussion with great interest - thanks for a great many thoughts on service innovation. As a practitioner, service designer and service innovator, both in the public sector and industry, I see many obstacles but also enablers for innovation in services. Here is my exposition:

Before you read further, I would ask you to close your eyes for a second and try to visualize an innovator in front of you.

Is he or she like the professor in a white coat with bushy eyebrows who shuts himself in the lab, with bubbling tubes and long computations, for years after coming up with an innovation?
This is the standard image that I encounter. A simple test with my 6 year old son illustrates this. I asked him to make a drawing of an innovator for me, which I needed for a lecture on the topic. He asked me if I wanted a lab or a factory. Sigh ...

The word innovation has yet to be released from the industrialized era.
An impediment to service innovation is that a lot of people see innovation as a new combination of elements in the periodic system or technology. Or that innovation comes from long complex calculations. The misconception that engineering will lead us to service innovations derived probably from here. The belief that innovation coms form brooding introverts, perhaps combined with "crazy creativity" leads us in error. If you look up innovation in the National Encyclopedia the answer is: “innovation, a technological invention that is viewed as progress”. The term innovation in services needs to be decoupled from the natural sciences.

"Service innovation is about leadership in relevance
and not commercial technology leadership!"

Another obstacle is the lack of relevant customer insights combined with lack of innovation processes. Most organizations make continuous quantitative customer surveys. An example may shows that 12% of visitors in the emergency room feel X and 71% think Y. Thousands of people answering questions that have been internally identified as key issues. The customer's view is pressed into the internal world view. The quantitative studies are potentially useful to trigger a change process, but completely useless for service innovation. What typically happens is that a call goes out to the relevant department that may read something like this: "Welcome to the Innovation workshop on Wednesday from 3 to 5 (and do not forget the Post-it notes).” At the time of writing there are probably hundreds of such frustrating meetings around the Swedish service organizations. The workshop is close to worthless because the figure of 12% is not inspiring and it doesn’t describe why the customers think in a certain way, only that they do. There is no starting point for creative innovation. The focus should be on how it should be instead of what it is today. This is what service innovation is about.

Service innovation will not happen without a highly customer centered process grounded in real life.
You need the ability to gain insight into the customer’s context and in the same process, preferably by the same people, translate these insights into new and value-adding service solutions that are relevant for the customers. Linking customer insight with innovative practices is essential.
A customer involving and iterative approach where the client is continuous present is a prerequisite.
This means that we must move from secret innovation processes in companies (All documents concerning innovation in the 1900 was marked Confidential) to an open development processes (Open Innovation and Co-Creation), where the customer can participate (like this forum).

We also need service developers to walk in their customers shoes. Anyone involved in developing services for health care should occasionally lie down on a hospital bed and take the tour to the surgery and think about the relationship between words helplessness and insecurity.

This is where service designers have a role to play, with developed and proven industrial design methods they are able to:

    * Understand work close to the customer and thereby bring in large amounts of complex knowledge about their real life situations.
    * Translate customer knowledge with innovative approaches in to how the service should be designed
    * Visualize innovations in a easy to understand way to promote unity, inspiration and clarity that lead to real changes

Service design is the starting point for relevant customer service innovation!
